Shearing!

naked sheep We shear our flock twice a year.  It is a real event!  Puffy, fleece-laden sheep are pulled out one by one, sat down  in the middle of the barn floor and shorn. Our shearers do an expert job, ensuring that the fleece comes off in one continuous piece with no second cuts.  The “naked sheep” then return to the flock.  It’s interesting that their buddies don’t recognize them!  Sheep are very visual animals, and there is quite a bit of jostling in the flock on shearing day. We’ve seen spring lambs searching frantically for their mamas when the newly sheared ewes are right beside them!

After shearing, we do a preliminary skirting to remove belly and leg sections.  A more careful skirting follows. We send our skirted fleece out to be professionally washed and processed to ensure the finest product.

If you are interested in raw fleece, let us know.  We can send you the fresh fleece from any of our animals.

Icelandic yarn is surprisingly soft against the skin, especially yarn spun from the exceptionally soft lamb fleeces. One of the things we love about Icelandics are the way each animal produces its own beautiful and uniquely colored yarn, from a rich, chocolate brown to a warm oatmeal. The natural colors are subtle and wonderful, much richer than commercially dyed yarns. However, if you’d like to dye them, our Icelandic fleeces take dye easily.

Maggie’s Farm Icelandic roving is professionally washed and carded.  Roving spins and felts beautifully and is available in the same array of rich natural colors.  Roving contains both thel (soft interior coat) and tog (long, lustrous outer hairs).  We find the combination of thel and tog adds interest to felted objects. We also offer “dehaired” roving.  Let us know if you are interested.
